HBAB 501 Research Methods (3 0 3)

Philosophy of science, method debates in social sciences, methodology of history, scientific research methods and techniques, methods of using libraries. Scientific thesis, article and report writing methods. Form and content features that should be found in a scientific work. Science and research concepts, basic features and differences of research in social sciences; quantitative and qualitative research methods, scientific research steps, research models, data collection methods, data analysis, report writing, use of research results.

HBAB 535 Classical Ottoman Turkish Texts I

Writing and reading of signs related to letters, types of writing, words with the same spelling, words with similar spelling and pronunciation. The meter of Arabic words, ismi fâil and ismi mef'ûller, aksâmi seb'a, sifati müsebbehe, mübâlaga sigalari, ismi tafdil, ismi mekân, ism'i zamân, ism’i âlet, ismi tasgir, ismi mensûp, Arabic pronouns, infinitives, kemiyyet and keyfiyyet in Arabic words, attribution, adjective composition, prepositions in Arabic.

Recognizing, determining and analyzing the literature that deals with the Alevi Bektashi belief and thought system and its types, Qasida, Gazel, Mesnevi, Murabba; Koşma, Tevhid, İlahi-Nefes, Münacaat, Elifname, Na’t, Esma-i Nebi, Gevhername, Bolapname, Aliname, Maktel-i Hüseyin, Düvazname, Faziletname, Mansurname, Methiye, Mersiye, Vücudname, Devriye, Hikmet, Şathiye ve Tarikatname

 HBAB Sufi Schools (Tariqa) (303)  

The basic concepts of the Sufi schools, which are one of the interpretations of Islam, besides their acceptance of their perception of worship, their distinctive religious ceremonies, dhikr, supererogatory prayers, and the garments they consider sacred in terms of their messages. Comparative study of mysticism trends such as Yesevilik / Yesevism, Haydarilik / Haydarism, Melametilik / Melamism, Kalenderilik / Kalenderism, Alevilik / Alevism, Bektaşilik / Bektashizm, Halvetilik / Khalwatism; Mevlevilik / Mawlavism, Kadirilik / Qâdiriyya, Nakşibendilik / Naqshibandiyya.

HBAB 507 Sufism in the Turkic World (303)  

The Concept of Sufism and the Formation of Sufism in Turks, Colonizer Turkish Dervishes and the function of Sufi institutions (Tekke, dervish) and Sufis in the Islamization and Turkification of Anatolia, The Nature of Turkish Sufism Literature, The place and importance of Hoca Ahmet Yesevi and Yesevism in the formation of Turkish Sufism-Shamanism, Its effect on Sufi Islamic Sects. Sufism and the first great dervishes of Turkish Sufi literature in Turkistan.

HBAB 509 Systematic History of Sufism (303)  

Introduction, definition of Sufism; subject, purpose and method. The source and development course of Sufism, the periods of Sufism history, ascetism and Sufism periods, the period of sects, the main Sufis and their works, basic concepts and sources.

HBAB 511 Alevi- Bektashi Mythology (303)  

         The concept of mythology, the relation of mythology and belief, the comparison of mythological values in the Alevi Bektashi belief system through the basic values of Turkish mythology, Alevi charismatic personalities, heroes and mythology, basic concepts, and sources.

HBAB 513 Historical Sources of Alevi- Bektashism (303)           

            Identifying and examining the genres which are qualified as historical documents such as salname, seyahatname as well as the genres such as Buyruk, şecere, icazetname, which are the basic written sources of Alevi-Bektashism.

            HBAB 515 Alevi- Bektashi Rituals (303)

            Concepts of ceremony and ritual, social functions of ceremonies, evaluation of the impact of ceremonies performed in Alevi Bektashi belief system to society, classification of ceremonies in Alevi Bektashi structural terms, recognition, interpretation and examination of Alevi Bektashi ceremonies.

            HBAB 517 Hz. Ali and The Twelvers (303)

            The life of İmam Ali, İmam Hasan’ül Mücteba, İmam Hüseyin, İmam Zeynel Abidin, İmam Muhammed’ül Bakır, İmam Cafer’üs Sadık, İmam Musa-i Kazım, İmam Aliyy’ür Rıza, İmam Muhammed’ül Takiyy’ül Cevad, İmam Aliyy’ün Naki, İmam Hasan’ül Askeri, İmam Muhammed Mehdi, who are the main charismatic figures of Alevi Bektashism. Examining and comprehending the socio-cultural and historical relationship between Twelvers mentioned with the Alevi Bektashi belief system.

            HBAB 519 Works of Hacı Bektaş Veli (303)

Examining and analyzing the works of Hacı Bektaş Veli, which are said to be brought into being about his name, life, the period he lived, coming to Anatolia, philosophy, death and belief system.

HBAB 521 Sociology of History (303)

The role of sociology in understanding history will be specified. The understanding of sociology of history by Ibn Khaldun, who made the first call, will be given. Through Max Weber, one of the classical sociologists, how to use ideal types to understand history and the specificities of history and the science of sociology in ideal typification of historical events will be shown. It will be given that historical data cannot be understood without taking into account the religious, political, economic and cultural life of the nomadic Turkmens (Türkmenler), that only written documents are not sufficient in reading history, and that they should be evaluated as a whole with social life.

HBAB 523 Traditional Alevism (303)

Basic works of traditional Alevism will be introduced. Information will be given about their beliefs and worship. Information will be given about the effects of pre-Islamic Turkish beliefs and other religions of Middle Eastern origin such as Manism and Mazdeism. The focus will be on the organization of the ocaks in understanding traditional Alevism. Social institutions such as Dedelik, Müsahiplik, Düşkünlük ve Dar, which have been developed by traditional Alevism, will be focused on.

HBAB 525 Alevism- Bektashism Studies (303)

The works with sociological content based on the hierarchical structure of the ocaks, historical social foundations and modern organization styles of the ocaks, rural and urban life, individual and group identities will be examined within the Alevism-Bektashism studies until today.

HBAB 527 Sociology of Ethnicity (303)

The concepts of ethnicity and minority will be given. It will be explained that ethnicity depends on more than one factor such as ancestry, religion, language, culture, politics and geography and it is not possible to explain it with a single factor subject to emic and etic considerations. The relationship between ethnicity and nationalism will be evaluated. It will be evaluated how concepts that refer to ethnicity such as Alevi, Bektashi, Turk, Turkmen, Turkish Alevi, Kurdish Alevi, Zaza Alevi, Caferi, Nusayri, Ismaili are understood from emic and etic perspectives.

HBAB 529 Sociology of Religion (303)

The course will consist of three parts. The first chapter is devoted to describing the nature of religion as a sociological research phenomenon. This is followed by the examination of theoretical and factual issues related to the relations between religion and culture and social life in the second part. Here, the focus is on theoretical analyzes and empirical findings on the relations between religion and the organization of social and economic life, social solidarity and conflict. The third part is devoted to the examination and discussion of how religious beliefs and practices accompany the formation processes of ethnic groups, social and political movements, and their consequences in terms of social and political change / stability in the contemporary world.

HBAB 531 Transition of Ottoman Center and Periphery Organizations (303)

The innovation efforts that started in the classical period in the Ottoman Empire and the beginning of the process of opening to the west. The change and development phases that this process brought about in the central and provincial organization of the Ottoman Empire. The change caused by these phases in society.

            HBAB 533 Modern History of Ottoman Renewal (303)

The reflection of the change in the management understanding and its opening to the west in the last period of the Ottoman Empire and social reactions.

The seminars that the students prepare according to their specialities will be discussed and evaluated as a preparatory to their academic dissertations.

 

 

 

 

HBAB 533 Classical Ottoman Turkish Literary Texts I

Persian nouns and noun phrases, phrase types, adjective clauses, word formation. Persian Infinitives, verb stems, ismi fâil ve ismi mef’ûller, aksâmi seb’a, sifati müsebbehe, mübâlaga sigalari, compound words, compound adjectives, prepositions. Phonetic changes in Persian words, conjugations. Studies on the printed and manuscript texts.

HBAB 504 Alevi- Bektashi Prose Texts

Recognition, identification, and analysis of prose texts which discuss Alevi-Bektashi belief-thought system as a theme.

HBAB 506 Alevi Bektashi Literary Texts

Recognition, identification, and analysis of the works about Alevi-Bektashi belief system.  Analysis of religious texts called “Buyruk”.

HBAB 508 Ocaks in Alevism- Bektashism

The concept of ocak in Alevi belief system, construction of ocaks, the comparison between ocaks in Pre Islam Turkish culture -belief system and ocaks in Alevi belief system, the historical flow of the instituition of ocak,  classification and characteristics of Alevi ocaks, hierarchical structuring between ocaks in Anatolia, recognition and analysis of functions of Alevi ocaks. 

HBAB 510 Comparative Folk Beliefs 

Evaluation of the terms and concepts about belief systems adopted by Turks from past to present, thier traditional philosophy of life, religion, faith, folk belief, the conception of God in religions with books. Comparison of religion, belief and cultural systems which may be closely related to Alevi belief system.

HBAB 512 Rituals and Practices

The concept of ritual, social functions of rituals, ritual period and structure, basic rituals and their classifictaions in Alevi-Bektashi belief systems, Thinking and making analysis on socio-cultural and belief-oriented background and  the functions of cem rituals such as cem ritual of ikram kurbanı, cem ritual of görgü/ sorgu kurbanı, cem ritual of musahip kurbanı, cem ritual of Abdal Musa kurbanı.   

HBAB 514 Identity, Memory and Culture

Explaining the concepts of culture, memory and identity and studying on its socio-cultural dimension, cultural mind, the concepts of social and collective memory, the function of cultural mind on the construction of Alevi-Bektashi identity, identifying and analysing the role of Alevi-Bektashi basic cultural codes on the identity construction.

HBAB 516 Intangible Cultural Heritage

The data, approaches and studies about the importance and protection of cultural products will be analysed within the frame of Intangible Cultural Heritage Agreement signed by UNESCO. Alevi-Bektashism as a Turkish culture heritage will be emphasized, findings and analysis about maintaining and transferring cultural and belief elements which are almost extinct or crucial for maintaining will be revealed. 

HBAB 518 Seven Great Poets

Knowing prominent representatives of traditional singing who are also known  Nesimi, Yemini, Fuzuli, Şah İsmail Hatayi, Virani, Pir Sultan Abdal ve Kul Himmet in Alevi-Bektashi belief system. Analysing their poems within the scope of Alevi belief system and studying the effects and contributions of these mentioned Seven Great Poets on Alevi-Bektashi belief system.

HBAB 520 The Concepts in Alevism and Bektashism

Learning the concepts of ocak, dedelik, and cem ritual which underlie Alevi- Bektashi belief world, finding and analysing the concepts of taliplik, musahiplik which form background of above-mentioned concepts.

HBAB 522 Social Conflict and Identity Formation (303)

It will be explained that being other and othering are one of the natural observed phenomena in the operation of the society, and othering is a compulsory result which comes up as a part of practical process of human mind. Moreover, it will be given that each group makes a positive discrimination in the construction of other, and this discrimination which fills other group/ groups with negative emotions and notions is one of the general rules of sociopsychology. Although these discriminations are notable especially in the rural areas, with the urbanisation dwelling culture has dominated and accordingly homogeneous will occur.

HBAB 524 Multiculturalism (303)

What is multiculturalism? Its history, the processes leading to multiculturalism, from nation state to micro-nationalism, and the basic concepts about multiculturalism will be analysed. Information will be given about culture, ethnic identity, group identity, group versus individual, national identity, multicultural civil society, nation state within the scope of globalization, citizenship and multiculturalism, essentialism, and multiculturalism.

HBAB 526 Urban Alevism (303)

Information will be given about the cultural erosion that traditional Alevism suffered during the social change process. The effects of urbans on the alterations of the structure of the closed society with the migration from country to the town, on the loss of functions of social institutions, and on the belief and worship transfer and transformation will be mentioned. The efforts of traditional Alevism to hold on to life via the foundations and organizations. 

HBAB 528 Modernization Theory and Turkish Modernization

It is aimed to reveal the theoretical framework of Ottoman modernization and the intellectual foundations of modernization.

HBAB 530 Ottomans and Alevism

Pre-Ottoman Alevism in Anatolia, Babai Rebellion; Hacı Bektaş-ı Veli from a historical perspective; Nosairians in the Foundation period of Ottoman Empire; Janissaries and Bektashism; the role of Alevi / Bektashi dervish lodge on the Islamisation of Ottoman Rumelia; Bektashi dervish lodges in the Ottoman Anatolia; Alevi yuruks in the Ottoman; Alevi rebellions in the Classical Era (Şahkulu, Kalenderoğlu, Baba Zünnun etc,..); Ottomans and Persia (Safavid Empire); Yavuz Sultan Selim ve Şah İsmail; Nakibüleşraflık ınstitute; Sayyids and sheriffs; Vakay-i Hayriye and its effect on Alevism; archival sources of Ottoman Alevism; Ottoman Alevism studies.
